Our Story
The Handmade In The Hunter Markets was established by the late Karen Rowe. She had dedicated over 10 years to developing and growing the local markets in order to showcase the unique talents of makers across The Hunter Valley. In the beginning of 2022, the community was deeply saddened by her passing, leaving many fearing that her hard work of forming this unique market would finish. However, Jan and Anna were determined to continue Karen’s vision after being members of her maker community for years, so they decided to put their hands up to take over the market.
Jan and Anna Mikula are passionate makers themselves having run their stall, Beenatree Creations, at The Handmade In The Hunter Markets for years. So it was more than fitting for them to carry on with Karen’s work. For many years aside from being a maker, Jan has been within the sales industry while Anna was a nurse and midwife for over 25 years. Both Jan and Anna have been long term locals to the Hunter region - thriving in the beautiful area and simply soaking up their lifestyle.
Jan and Anna took the plunge into making their stall a full time job over the last 2 years, being able to offer the community unique, one off designed goods. They couldn’t have found a better lifestyle to transition to without Karen founding the Handmade In The Hunter Markets. Like most things, change can be a scary thing. However, with hard work and the support of the amazing stall holders, Anna and Jan know that they can continue the work done by Karen, and take steps to make it grow. Fortunately, the market has a core partnership with Sobels Wines, our host, playing an integral part in keeping the unique market-scape alive! They have provided a perfect place for visitors to come and see what our stall holders make.
Jan and Anna are budding with excitement for the future of the market, and the challenges that will come along with their new venture.
